The new S40 looks like a scaled down S60, which can't be a bad thing because the S60 is a fine looking sedan. Inside, the S40 uses an intriguing center stack that takes its cues from modern furniture design to free up space. Underpinning the new car is a corporate platform that's shared with the Mazda 3 and the upcoming Ford Focus. For the U.S., the car will be available only with a 170-hp naturally aspirated in-line five-cylinder engine and a 220-hp turbo five. All-wheel-drive will be offered, as will stability control and traction control. The car will go on sale in the United States in the spring of 2004.
