2008 is an even higher-performance year for Porsche than most - the 911 gets its most potent version yet (the GT2), and the Cayenne gets the GTS model. It's not as fast as the Turbo and Turbo S models, but its normally aspirated V-8 might appeal more to the purist. That is, if a purist would drive a Porsche SUV.

Either way, thanks to an upgraded intake and enlarged throttle butterfly, the GTS's 4.8-liter V-8 gains twenty horses over the version in the Cayenne S, and now assaults the pavement with 405 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Combined with a lower final drive ratio (4.1:1 instead of the Cayenne S's 3.55:1), the new version of Porsche's heavyweight SUV can accelerate to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 157 mph.

The Cayenne GTS features active anti-roll bars together with Porsche's PASM active suspension, and rides about an inch lower than the Cayenne S. It wears 295/35-21 tires in fenders that are flared by a half-inch, and uses the Turbo's aggressive front and rear-end treatments.

The GTS also features new, more aggressively bolstered sport seats to match its newfound cornering prowess. Now if Porsche could only make a lightweight version of the Cayenne that shed 1000 pounds...
