2005 Volvo Xc90 V 8 Rear Side View

Someone at Volvo apparently ate some bad herring few years back and decided that what this quirky, solid, and safe company needed was a V-8-powered SUV. While it isn't the route that one might have envisioned for the Swedes, the end product makes sense; the hefty XC90 simply needed more power. The new 315-horsepower V-8 comes from Yamaha, the Japanese company known for marine applications. It's transversely mounted, a feat allowed by the compactness afforded by a narrow 60-degree cylinder offset. Expect to pay a few thousand dollars more than a comparably equipped XC90 T6 for Volvo's land yacht with a boat engine.
