Summer's just around the corner, and so is the new Saab 9-3 convertible (well, actually, you'll have to wait until fall). But now, thanks to a 300 percent improvement in torsional rigidity compared with last year's model, the new 9-3 ragtop won't wobble as much as it goes around that corner. Aside from structural improvements, the electronically operated soft top has also been gussied up: It's supported by six bows instead of five, for a cleaner profile. The tonneau moves out over the trunk when the top is raised or lowered, and to reduce weight, it's now made of stamped aluminum. Though the convertible weighs a few hundred pounds more than the 9-3 sedan, its wedge shape lends it an air of muscularity. Seat-mounted safety belts and active safety roll hoops round out the softtop's upgrades.
Bottom line: The most popular four-seat luxo convertible just got a few welcome improvements.
