Absent on Picture Day

-BMW 3-series Coupe will arrive in late spring 2006 with styling and features similar to the sedan and wagon. M3 and convertible models will come later.

-Cadillac Escalade and EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Tahoe and Suburban, and GMC Yukon will debut at the 2006 Detroit show, with evolutionary styling, greatly improved interiors, and better engine and transmission offerings.

-Chevrolet Impala SS gets the same cosmetic makeover and credibility enhancement as the Impala. The first V-8 in over a decade puts some meat behind the SS badge--in the form of 303 hp and 323 lb-ft from the 5.3-liter small block. A four-speed automatic still does the shifting.

-Hyundai Santa Fe will be built in Hyundai's new Alabama plant, and moves up in size to put some distance between it and the Tucson. Expect V-6 power exclusively and less cartoonish styling. It's due in April.

-Toyota Echo gives way to a version of the Euro-sourced Yaris (itself a version of the Japanese-market Vitz), with a new name, eco-friendly features, and Scion xA-like style.
